The historical record shows Becak (rickshaw) came to Indonesia along with Chinese immigrants, where the word “Becak” itself came from the word “Be chia” (drawn carriage ) and survived to become one of the main public transportation until the 1980s, when Jakarta’s Government prohibit Becak in Jakarta because it can not compete with another vehicle that more modern and faster.
But unlike Jakarta, in Yogyakarta Becak is still a prima donna, maybe its because of two reasons. The first, the street in Yogyakarta is not as crowd as Jakarta, and second, the prestige of Yogyakarta as a famous place for city tour helped support the existence of Becak in Yogyakarta. No doubt that Yogyakarta has become a modern city with all modern public transportation anyway. But the sensation traveled up in the city using old styled Becak remains irreplaceable.
